Super Mario 64 isn't just a great game, it's an important one. The first 3D game in the series, its levels were open and inviting. Exploring them felt like stepping into a carefully crafted dreamscape. It gave us precise controls and tight platforming, the sort that felt good to pull off every single time even if we'd done it a thousand times before. It came out of the gate strong, and while subsequent entries in the franchise would build on it and tweak things here and there, it did so much right that everything else was just gravy by comparison. So many of those things are still evident in this N64 classic today - I think that's why Super Mario Odyssey is so beloved. It doesn't look or sound as slick as recent games; it feels aged once you're actually playing it. But its DNA is everywhere, informing almost every decision Nintendo made when throwing together a brand-new world for our mustachioed hero to traverse all these years later
